Kolkata, 19 December (HS): In response to the recent tragic incident of a water tank collapse at Burdwan station in West Bengal’s Howrah division, Eastern Railway has swiftly decided to eliminate all water tanks situated within station premises across the entire Eastern Railway network.
Sources indicate that the removal process will involve dismantling water tanks made of RCC concrete and iron from platform and station areas, relocating them to safer locations. Kaushik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway, emphasized the railway’s commitment to ensuring passenger safety, stating, “Eastern Railway considers providing safe travel to passengers as its first responsibility.”
“There are a total of 60 water tanks across Eastern Railway stations, and our plan is to remove them within the next year. The Railway’s objective is to dismantle these aging water tanks and construct modern replacements at secure locations,” he added.
The decision comes after the unfortunate incident on December 13, where a section of the water tank on platform number 2-3 at Burdwan station collapsed, resulting in the loss of four lives, with several others still undergoing treatment in hospitals. Eastern Railway’s proactive approach aims to prevent such incidents and enhance safety across its network.
Impact on MSMEs and Businesses: The removal and replacement of water tanks within Eastern Railway stations could potentially generate opportunities for local construction and infrastructure-related businesses. As the railway seeks to build modern and secure water tanks, contractors and suppliers in the region may find business prospects in providing materials, labor, and expertise for these projects. This initiative aligns with safety standards and could indirectly contribute to the growth of businesses involved in construction and related sectors.
